Welcome to Year 1 and 2
Autumn Term 1
Castles, Knights and Dragons
Our topic this term is called Castles, Knights and Dragons. We will be kick-starting our exciting topic with a visit from knight! He is coming into school to give us a practical session to learn more about what it takes to be a knight. He will give a talk to the children and bring in some armour for them to try on and some artefacts to handle! We hope our ‘hands on history’ will ignite some really creative writing. We will be exploring how castles have changed over the ages and how to defend/ attack a castle. In geography, we will look at where castles can be found in this country and use our mapping skills to plot these on a map. We will be learning some famous stories such as King Arthur and St George and the Dragon. In Art and Design we will be making our own shields, coats of arms and catapults (we promise to take special care when firing them!). We will also use our imaginations to write instructions on how to catch and look after a dragon! As well as this, we will be reading different stories about dragons and create dragon-inspired artwork. What a busy and exciting term it is going to be!
In numeracy, we have started the year by focusing on developing our estimating and counting skills, including counting larger numbers in multiples of 2, 5 and 10. We will be learning about the value of numbers and adding and subtracting numbers as well as recognising the inverse calculations of these
In literacy we will be linking our work to our topic and will be starting the topic off by reading “George and the Dragon”. This will inspire lots of our own writing and we will even get the chance to re-write the story. We will be learning how to use imaginative descriptions when describing characters and settings as well as writing instructions and recounts later in the term.
